My office manager sent me a message about my lesson schedule for tomorrow. I asked for one change and he was okay with that. Then he sent a message saying "Have a good Sunday". Uh, buddy, it's Monday today. It's also "Seijin no Hi", Coming of Age Day.
This day is when those who reach the age of majority (20 years-old) in the period from April 1st of the previous year to April 1st of the current year will adorn formal wear and attend a ceremony at a local government office. In the past I came across a poster advertising a ceremony to be held at a major Buddhist temple. I would hazard to say that is the exception rather than the norm.
I heard throught the grape vine that Coming of Age ceremonies have been postponed due the continuing spread of COVID-19. With a new strain of the virus having just been identified in Japan this is undoubtably the best course of action. For those in Yonezawa there is no change in plans...so far. The Coming of Age ceremony in this jurisdiction is usually held in May. But last year it was delayed until November. We'll see if there is a repeat of that situation this year....
